For the time being, this is a page of notes regarding the special language of the scriptures about the heavens being “opened”. Consider the following:
Luke 3:21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
If this is a description of something coming down from the sky, why is it necessary to tell us that “the heavens were opened”?
What you will see if you read all the texts, is a model in which the firmament/raqiya/heavens/sky was “opened” from time to time at special events. (Here’s a list of Bible passages.) There is considerable language concerning this in the Book of Enoch (1 Enoch), as well. I’ll be adding notes about that in the future. See also about the heavens being shut, as well as them being closed. All this language helps us to realize that the raqiya was in fact an enclosure of some sort.
